Storing wine comes with its own challenges. If you haven’t stored wine before, you might be surprised to know that it is not as straightforward as it seems. If you are planning on storing some of your precious bottles or need some tips to help with ageing your wine, this blog article is for you!
Whether your storing your wine at home or you opt for a storage solution there are a few things you need to be aware of before you tuck you darlings away but don’t fret; in this blog post we will give you the 101 on how to store wine.
First of all, you should note that not all wines are suitable to be stored, at least not as long as 20+ years. A matter of fact, the majority of the wines we buy are at their best within 18 months from the time it was bottled. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with storing your wines and tucking them away to develop flavour through aging them.
So now when that is over and done with, let’s begin going through the do’s and dont’s of storing wine.
Minimise temperature fluctuation
The first thing that is worth thinking about when you decide to store away your beloved bottles, is the temperature. Most people, when they store wine in their home, store it in the kitchen. It might seem like the obvious choice to have the bottles close at hand and they also make a nice display item. However, wine does not like the temperature to be too hot and since the kitchen often is the warmest room in a house, the kitchen is far from being the best option.
Now you might think that red wine is supposed to be in room temperature. That is true if you are planning to drink that bottle in the proximate future, however, if you are storing it, you will end up with a destroyed bottle of wine. The too hot conditions will make your wine age too fast and it will get “cooked”. The result you will end up with is a wine that is flat and flavourless. If you still want to store your wine in the kitchen, investing in a wine cooler is money well spent.
Not only does the temperature have to be right. You also want to make sure the temperature is constant. With a constantly changing temperature, the chemical makeup of the wine will change. A bottle of red that once was an exquisite bottle of wine will be ruined. If you are planning to store your bottles in a short term or long-term storage facility, make sure they can meet the temperature requirements. At Ezi Storage we have regulated storage facilities, with minimal temperature fluctuation, ensuring your wine will be safely stored at perfect conditions.
Turn the lights off
Too much ultraviolet light from the sun will damage your wine; even fluorescent bulbs can damage it! So make sure to store it in a dark and dry space. To be safe, we suggest you store your wine in wine cartons, to make sure your bottles are protected from light. You can also wrap them in cloth or butcher paper for additional protection.
Keep your bottles lying down, not standing upright
Traditionally, wine bottles has been stored lying down. This is mainly for one reason: it keeps the cork from drying out. Especially with corked bottles, you want the cork to be in contact with the wine to prevent it from potentially cracking. A cracked crock will allow for oxygen getting into the bottle, which will destroy the wine.
Additionally, no matter if you are storing your bottles at home or in your own wine cellar, in your wine cooler or in a storage space, storing your bottles lying down saves you space!
So to summarise, storing your wine bottles demands a bit of research. Be sure that your fine wines are stored under the proper conditions so that they don’t deteriorate, and you’ll be able to enjoy them for years. Additionally, come and visit our storage facility in Perth to pick up some of our packing materials, which will help save you time, space and money (cracked wine bottles no more!).
