Common storage questions for first timers

What can I store? What can I not store? How long do I have to rent? When you are renting a self-storage unit for the first time, you are bound to have questions popping up. So when you are speaking to a self-storage expert, make sure to use the following questions as a guide.

What type of security system do you have?

When you are storing your items, you want them to be safe and secure. Make sure to ask about the security in and around the storage facility. At Ezi Storage we have 24 hour CCTV so you can rest easy knowing that your possessions are safe and secure with us.

What can I actually store? What can’t I store?

Most household and business goods can be stored in a storage unit, if you can find it in a household, it can probably be stored. However, there are a few restrictions you should be aware of before you rent a unit and move your items to their new home. Below is a list of items that you can/can’t store. If you are unsure whether you can store a particular item, give us a call on 1300 730 306 and ask our friendly staff.

These are some of the things you can store in our units…

  • Books and general household clutter
  • Bed Frames and Mattresses
  • Side tables/ tall boys
  • Wardrobes and cupboards
  • Sofas and couches
  • Dining tables
  • Chairs
  • Coffee tables
  • Home office furniture

You can even store your car in our warehouse with access available 7 days a week. Perfect if you are working FIFO or going away on holiday and need somewhere to safely store your car.

But don’t store this….

  • Perishable Items

There is nothing worse than finding off/ mouldy food. You wouldn’t be so happy opening your storage unit to an “off smell” surrounding your beautiful antique furniture, would you? Keep away from fresh food, contained (canned) food and animal food. Keep the food at home and stick to storing items such as desks, chairs, mattresses, beds and suitcases.

  • Combustible, flammable, hazardous or toxic materials

Ask yourself, if I add fire to this, will it have an explosive and/or dangerous repercussion? If the answer to your question is yes, it does not go in a self-storage unit.

So steer clear from bringing in:

  •  gasoline
  • compressed gas
  • propane tanks
  •  kerosene
  • lamp and motor oil,
  • acid
  • grease
  • corrosives
  • fertilisers
  •  paint
  • cleaners,
  • chemicals
  • narcotics, or hazardous, toxic or biological waste
  • asbestos or anything containing asbestos
  • fireworks
  • Firearms and ammunition

Firearms and ammunition need to be stored in safe boxes and in climate controlled units.

  • Live plants

Just like food, live plants will attract insects and vermin to your unit, something that neither you nor your storage neighbours wants to stay clear from. What more is, you’ll more than likely end up with dead plants.

Who has access?

A good self-storage facility should be able to give you information about who has access to your unit and at what time. Make sure to ask the staff at the storage facility.

Opening Hours?

You’ll want your items stored at a facility where you can easily access your items, no matter day or time. Be on the lookout for a self-storage facility with flexible hours suitable to your needs.

How do I know what size is right for me?

Unsure about the size of the unit you need? Don’t sweat; you can use our Storage Calculator. Simply put in what kind of item you want to store and how many. However, this is only a rough estimate. The actual amount of space you need also depends on how accessible you want the storage unit to be and the way you fill your space. If you need tips on how to best fill up your storage space, read our tips on packing efficiency (link) to learn how you can get the most out of your space.

What is the storage rental cycle?

To avoid locking yourself into unnecessary contracts, you should ask the manager how the storage cycle looks like. If you are unsure how long you will need to store your items, you are best opting for a flexible contract. At Ezi Storage we want to offer our clients as much flexibility as possible, you can rent with us for a month, a year or however long you want, our contracts are flexible. Additionally, if you find yourself growing out of your current unit, we will help you move into a bigger one.

Do you offer insurance for my items in storage?

If you find your items are worth storing, they are probably worth to insure. Make sure you know the insurance policy for the self-storage you are planning to use. At Ezi Storage you get $5000 free insurance with your unit each month, anymore needed is at a cost of $1 per $1000 insured, per month,  everything to give you complete peace of mind.

By having the answer to these questions you will thank your future self and avoid nasty surprises.
