Protect Your Belongings this Winter

With the winter season approaching soon, we recommend storing items you won’t be using over the colder months. No matter the unit size you are interested in renting with us, our flexible short and long term rental options are able to suit your individual requirements. We’ll take the stress out of storing summer items so you won’t have to be tying down outdoor equipment when a storm approaches or dusting cobwebs off the Christmas tree!

Storing seasonal belongings is a great way to declutter spaces and to keep them protected from outdoor elements such as dust, pests and humidity. We ensure protection from all these factors with our state-of-the-art storage facility in Perth. Our storage units are inside a fully enclosed warehouse and are also under 24/7 surveillance. Whether you need to store away summer clothes or outdoor gear and equipment, we’ve come up with 3 easy steps to prepare your belongings for storage.

Cleaning

Any personal items that you are wanting to store for a duration of time at our facility will need to be cleaned prior to the storage term. This will ensure your belongings will not be susceptible to odours, deterioration or mould. This involves everything from clothing, linen, crockery, appliances and all outdoor equipment. It is also important to note that any metal belongings should be clean and dried adequately as to prevent rust from occurring. If you are planning to store recreational items such as bikes, boats and cars, we recommend servicing them prior to storing them with us to ensure they are able to maintain their condition whilst not being used for a duration of time.

Protecting

Protecting your equipment is a no-brainer when it comes to increasing the longevity and lifespan of your items. When storing clothes, we recommend rolling them to prevent hard creases or making use of hangers. They should be stored in linen bags to allow them to breathe and prevent mould, otherwise be kept covered with the same material on a clothing rack. Make use of old linen or towels to cover other items such as bikes, outdoor furniture and appliances to keep them dust free. We also offer a variety boxes and packing materials to make storing and protecting your items easier. From cartons with inserts, vacuum seal bags, bubble wrap and covers for mattresses and TV’s, Ezi Storage is a one-stop-shop for all storage needs.

Organising

Like any room in the house, organising your belongings into their own categories will make accessing it a whole lot easier when the time comes. For any small items such as utensils or fishing equipment, it’s a good idea to keep them stored in smaller containers which are more functional than larger ones. Don’t be afraid to label your containers and boxes either! This comes in handy for an array of smaller items otherwise we also recommend creating a checklist of items going into storage. Specific items such as outdoor furniture or beach equipment should be stored together in an allocated space.

Ezi Storage offers storage units in 15 different sizes, meaning you can store absolutely anything with us! To make the process easier, we also offer a variety of packing boxes and materials to suit and protect your belongings. Our facilities are open every day to inspect for anyone who is considering renting storage space, otherwise our friendly team are here to help with any storage advice or further information on storing your belongings ahead of winter. Contact our team today to get started!

How to Organise Your Moving Boxes

Moving to a new house ranks up there as one of the most stressful lifetime events you’ll ever experience. With so much on your plate, it’s easy to rush through the packing process, only to discover your belongings are damaged or have gone missing once you get to the other side.

The simple act of carefully packing your belongings can do you a lot of favours during this time. To help make your move as smooth as possible and protect your possessions, here’s a short guide on how to efficiently organise your moving boxes.

Start with the Right Boxes and Materials

Before starting your move, make sure you have the right materials. This includes:

At Ezi Storage, we can supply all these items. Check out our range of moving materials and cheap moving boxes.

Plan and Label your Packing

There’s no point in packing your boxes nicely and carefully if you have no idea what’s in them. Make sure you sort and categorise your belongings and label your moving boxes before you begin packing.

Start by deciding which items are destined for which rooms. Label the boxes accordingly and number them so that you will know if there are boxes missing once you get to your new home. It also makes unpacking a breeze, because you won’t be running around from room to room.

Utilise Boxes and Space Correctly

It pays to pack your removal boxes in a well thought out way. Pack heavier items in smaller boxes, so that you can actually lift them. It’s also a good idea to pack heavier items closer to the bottom of the boxes, as this will reduce the risk of lighter objects becoming squashed or broken.

Ensure delicate items are wrapped well in either bubble wrap or butcher’s paper. You should also aim to fill all the empty spaces. Think of it like a game of tetris. The less space in between the items, the higher score. The best packed boxes won’t rattle or move at all, ensuring your items will be less likely to become damaged during the moving process. Consider using soft items, such as pillows, or teddies if you’re so inclined, as cushioning materials to keep your belongings safe.

Properly Prepare Your Boxes

Prepare your boxes before packing. Strengthen weak spots with tape and consider an extra layer of cardboard as reinforcement for particularly heavy boxes. If you’re struggling to seal a box, there’s a chance you’ll run into issues later in the move, with boxes popping open at inopportune times. Avoid overpacking and make sure cartons are tightly sealed with tape. You should also stick to quality packing materials, as they are less likely to break and create heartache, especially with heavy or easily breakable items.

Make use of special packing boxes:

Specialty moving boxes are designed just so for a reason. And we definitely recommend using them.

For clothing

  • Our port-a-robe carton with built-in rod is perfect for moving and shifting clothing. It’s designed so you can just pop your clothes on the hangers into the box. This means less time spent packing, unpacking and ironing your clothes. However, be careful not to overpack these cartons, as it may cause the boxes to break, bringing you right back to where you won’t want to be – a pile of clothes on the ground.

For the kitchen

  • For cups, mugs and other delicate items, make sure you make use of the purpose-built kitchen cartons. Although we still recommend wrapping fragile items, it reduces the risk of breaking your wine glasses or mugs.

For the study

  • Archive boxes are the easiest and most efficient way to transport important files and loose-leaf paper. It reduces the chance of documents getting damaged during the move, and also keeps them organised when unpacking on the other end. Just make sure you’re labelling the boxes well as you pack them, so you know which boxes are which.

For televisions and pictures

  • These items are often too large and awkwardly shaped to fit into regular packing boxes, For framed paintings, we recommend our picture cartons. Additionally, we offer plasma television covers in a range of sizes. These specialised moving materials are designed to minimise damage during the move, but it also lets the removal team know to take extra precaution when handling them.

 If in Doubt, Contact Us.

We look forward to sharing more tips with you on which removal boxes will be best for your needs. Feel free to contact us for more information and advice on our moving boxes and storage services.

How To Calculate Your Storage Costs

When making the decision to hire a self-storage unit, one of the most important factors to consider is the storage cost. You may be solving one life problem by putting certain items into storage, but you could easily find yourself faced with another if you end up with a unit that costs more than what your budget will allow.

While there are affordable self-storage options in Perth, it’s best to estimate how much you will be looking to pay before you start making enquiries. By doing some rough calculations, you’ll be able to get an idea of how much space you’ll need and determine if self-storage is a viable option for you. Plus, when you do start reaching out to storage companies, it will be much easier to gauge whether you’re getting value for your money.

Try following these steps to calculate how much your storage is likely to cost.

Make a list

Let’s start simple. Get yourself a pen and paper or open up the Notes app in your phone. Go through your home room by room and write down all of the items that you would like to move into a storage unit in a perfect world.

Once your list is complete, rearrange it according to priority. At the top of your list should be the critical items that must move out of your home no matter what. These items could be taking up too much space in your garage or may be too valuable to leave behind while you’re travelling. It all depends on your situation and your personal preferences.

As you move through your list, the possessions of least importance should come at the end. These are the belongings you’re willing to compromise on; while it would be ideal to put these items into self-storage, you could feasibly keep them in your home if needed.

Measure it up

When hiring a self-storage unit, you’re paying for the amount of space that you’re using. As part of calculating your storage costs, you need to figure out the exact size of each of your possessions. Use a toolbox tape measure on solid, bulky pieces or a sewing measuring tape for pliable, oddly shaped items and record the height, width and depth of each one.

Calculate cubic metres

After collecting all of your measurements, it’s time to determine how much space each item will need. To do this, you need to calculate the size of your belongings in cubic metres.

Multiply the depth by the width by the height for each item. If you measured in millimetres, you will need to divide the total by 1,000,000,000 to convert it to cubic metres. Or if you measured in centimetres, you will need to divide by 1,000,000.

Once you know the total cubic metres, you can identify the size of the unit you will require. Storage companies in Perth will generally have a breakdown of storage unit sizes and the associated costs available online, allowing you to see how much you will be looking to pay for your self-storage.

If the total is outside your price bracket, you can refer back to your priority list and start removing non-essential items to help bring down the cost.

Use a storage calculator

If maths isn’t your strong suit and the idea of calculating the cubic metres for each of your belongings seems overwhelming, have no fear. You could use a storage calculator instead.

A storage calculator will break down the most common items that are likely to be found in each room of the house and will show the average size for each one in cubic metres. All you have to do is punch in the quantities for each item and voila, you’ll have a total cubic metres estimate, use our storage calculator now.

While a storage calculator will make everything a lot easier, it’s important to note that the total cubic metres it provides to you will be a very rough guide. Your couch or bookshelf may be a bit larger or smaller than what the calculator has approximated, so it will never be 100% accurate.

Budget for packing materials

It’s easy to get hung up on the cost associated with hiring a storage unit and forget about the little extra things that you will need. Make sure you factor packing materials into your budget. You will need cartons, bubble wrap, tape and other accessories to protect your items while they are kept in storage.

Affordable Self-Storage Options

At Ezi Storage, we offer flexible contracts and affordable prices on our large range of secure self-storage units. Located close to the Mitchell Freeway just north of Perth, we can take care of all your storage needs. Contact us today to find out more.

Unexpected Ways to Use a Self-Storage Unit

There will always be certain life situations that will naturally lead you to look into self-storage options. If you’re living in temporary accommodation while waiting to move into your new home, it makes sense to keep excess items in short term storage and only keep the essentials with you. Or, if you’re travelling abroad for an extended period of time, you may need a secure storage solution to ensure your valuable belongings remain safe for the time you’re away such as single item storage.

In each of these circumstances, hiring self-storage space is a logical choice, but there are many other creative ways to use a storage unit that you may not have thought of before. Here are 5 unexpected ways to turn your storage unit into a fun and practical space that could spark some joy in your life.

#1 Side Hustle Space

Do you run a small business offering in your spare time? You could use a large or small self-storage unit as a working area or to hold your inventory.

No matter whether you specialise in woodworking, painting or other artistic crafts, you could use your storage unit as a workshop, providing you with a permanent space with your ideal set up. It could be the perfect solution if you have a small home or a lack of room to undertake your side hustle activities.

For e-commerce businesses on-selling products, you could keep all of your stock in storage to keep it from piling up around your home and taking up precious space.

#2 Music Practice Studio

When you love to jam with your friends, it can be tricky to find somewhere to store all of your instruments and a location to practice together.

A storage unit could be the answer. It offers a secure place where you can leave bulky and expensive equipment, including drum kits, keyboards, amps and more. Plus, if you get a large self-storage unit, you can use it as an affordable rehearsal space where you won’t have to worry about disturbing any family members or neighbours.

#3 Christmas Deco Storage

If you like to go all-out on your Christmas decorations, then you know what it’s like to try and find space to store your tree, lights, outdoor displays and more for the other 11 months of the year.

With a self-storage unit, you’ll be able to keep your Christmas decorations out of your home when not needed and ensure they remain in good condition during the off season.

 #4 Wine Cellar

For many, the concept of having a wine collection large enough to require additional storage is a dream come true. If you enjoy a good wine, you may have been putting off building up your collection due to limited space at home. By hiring a small self-storage unit, you could start to make your very own wine cellar a reality.

#5 Personal Gym

Even those with an interest in health and fitness can be put off by the idea of going to the gym. From the cost of the membership to a lack of comfort in exercising in a communal area, it’s easy to see why many would prefer to workout at home. The only issue is finding the room to set up treadmills, weights, bikes and more.

Once again, a storage unit could be the perfect space to create a personal gym. It allows room for your equipment and also provides a private area where you can exercise undisturbed. You could even find the ongoing cost is less than your gym subscription.

Considering Self-Storage?

Self-storage offers endless opportunities to store items and undertake activities that you ordinarily could not do at home. If you’re looking for a storage unit in Perth, contact the experts at Ezi Storage today.

Tips To Prepare Your Car For Storage

There could be many reasons why you’re thinking about putting your car into storage. Perhaps you’re looking to take an extended holiday and want to keep your car secure while you’re away. Or maybe you simply don’t have the space at home to keep an extra car that you don’t use on a regular basis.

No matter your situation, there are steps you must take to prepare your vehicle for storage, especially if you intend to store your car for 30 days or more. By undertaking a few quick and easy tasks, you’ll be able to keep your car in tip top condition and ensure it’s in full working order when the time comes to reclaim your vehicle.  Here’s 6 tips to protect and maintain your car while it’s in storage.

#1 Select an appropriate storage unit

First of all, you’ll need to hire a car storage unit that offers sufficient space to store your vehicle. Generally, a 6x3m storage unit will be suitable for most makes and models. Secondly, it’s best to choose undercover storage facilities that are contained within an enclosed environment. When your car is kept indoors, it will be protected from the elements and won’t be subjected to harsh or extreme temperatures.

fifo car storage 6m x 3m

#2 Clean your car inside and out

It’s a good idea to clean your car interior before putting it into storage. For starters, it will allow you to return to a nice and neat car, but more importantly, it will reduce the build-up of dust around fixtures and gears. Give your car a thorough vacuum and wipe down, and make sure you check all the nooks and crannies for rubbish and food scraps. The last thing you want is for mould to grow or for your car to develop an odour while it’s in storage. You can also leave the windows down a little bit to encourage ventilation and ensure the air inside your vehicle doesn’t become too stale or musty.

When it comes to the outside of your car, you will need to wash away all contaminants that could corrode the paint and turn to rust. This includes dirt, dust, water marks and any other general grime that your car could have picked up. It also pays to wax your car after washing it to provide it with an extra layer of protection while in storage.

During the process of washing your car, you may also want to lubricate the bonnet, boot and door seals to prevent them from drying out and becoming squeaky and creaky.

#3 Replace your oil and coolant

If you’re looking at long term car storage, you should definitely replace your oil and coolant before you leave your vehicle behind. With time, the oil inside your car can become acidic and start to destroy your engine.  By filling your car with fresh oil, it will take longer for it to break down and turn acidic. You should also fill up your car with petrol to avoid moisture build up inside the fuel tank as this could lead to other mechanical problems.

#4 Take care of your tyres

Tyres will natural lose pressure over time, but the rate of this process can be significantly increased when your car is left stationary. Under the weight of your unmoving vehicle, your tyres will be far more likely to develop flat spots. There are, however, a couple of things you can do to stop this from happening.

If you or someone you trust is able to access the car every 1-2 weeks, it’s worthwhile taking it for a short 15-minute drive to help keep the tyres in good condition. Alternatively, if this isn’t an option, you can remove the tyres and put your car up on jack stands.

Whether you decide to keep your tyres on or not, it’s recommended that you leave the handbrake off to ensure the brake pads don’t rust or seize. If you leave your tyres on, you can use a tyre stopper to prevent your car from moving while the handbrake is off.

#5 Do what’s best for your battery

Regular, short drives every couple of weeks won’t just help your tyres. It will also keep your battery charged and give you the opportunity to run the aircon to ensure the air quality in your car remains fresh.

If you’re unable to arrange for your car to be driven while it’s in storage, you can either remove the battery completely to retain the charge or you can hook it up to a trickle charger.

 #6 Notify your insurer

When putting your car into storage, you may be tempted to cancel the insurance in order to save a bit of money. But beware, if you need to reinsure the car at a later date, your insurance company may notice the gap in coverage and increase your premium. It’s best to instead notify your insurer that your car will be kept in a secure, undercover storage facility, and this will most likely lead to a decrease in price in the meantime.

Ways To Maximise Storage Unit Space

There are two main reasons why you should make the effort to optimise the space in your self-storage unit. The first is to ensure you’re getting full value for your money. There’s no need to pay for storage space that you don’t actually need. The second is to enable you to fit as many items as possible into your unit, allowing you to free up precious space around your home.

To help you make the most of your unit, here are 7 ways you could maximise your self-storage space.

1) Use Packing Boxes In The Same Size

It’s so easy to try and put your belongings into anything you can find, from garbage bags to laundry baskets, plastic containers and more. The only trouble is, when putting these items into your storage unit, you’ll quickly find it challenging to stack them on top of one another. Garbage bags slip and slide and uncovered laundry baskets aren’t exactly ideal for creating a sturdy pile. By using packing boxes in the same shape and size, you’ll be able to neatly arrange your stored items with ease.

2) Fill Up Your Packing Boxes

When making best use of the space in your storage unit, you also need to consider the amount of space in your packing boxes. Rather than only half filling your boxes or using them to store bulky objects that may be better off loose, try to use your boxes to your advantage. Items with a uniform shape, such as books and plates, or objects that came in a box of their own, such as shoes or technology accessories, are ideal for storing in cartons.

3) Use Spaces Within Your Items

Any item with a compartment is a source of valuable storage space. For instance, if you have chests of drawers, cupboards or portable wardrobes going into storage, make sure you fill them to the brim with smaller objects. Even washing machines and fridges and offer spaces to store additional items.

4) Use The Gaps Between Your Items

Every nook and cranny is an opportunity to store an object. Flat items such as picture frames and mirrors can be squeezed in between boxes and down the sides of your self-storage unit, while shapeable objects including blankets and towels can be moulded around other objects to fill the gaps.

5) Dismantle Your Furniture

If a piece of furniture does not offer you an opportunity for additional storage space, it’s best to break it down into smaller parts. Items such as dining room tables and chairs, coffee tables and bed frames can be disassembled to take up less room.

6) Create a Storage Map

For those who love organising and want to take their self-storage skills to the next level, you could make a storage plan that maps out exactly where you’re going to place each item. It’s a good idea to use graph paper and treat every square as a square meter of space. By planning where everything will go, you will also be able to make sure you have selected the most appropriate storage unit size for your needs.

7) Check In Every 3-6 Months

While it’s tempting to set up your self-storage unit and forget about it, it’s a good idea to do a check in every 3 to 6 months. You may find yourself with additional items that need to be stored, while objects taking up room in your unit may no longer be required. With regular check ins, you can make sure that you are using your storage unit to its full potential.

If you’re looking for a self-storage solution in Perth, talk to the experts at Ezi Storage. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will make sure you get the most out of your storage unit. With a wide range of unit sizes in a secure, fully indoor facility, we offer long term and short-term storage options.
