Moving to a new house ranks up there as one of the most stressful lifetime events you’ll ever experience. With so much on your plate, it’s easy to rush through the packing process, only to discover your belongings are damaged or have gone missing once you get to the other side.
The simple act of carefully packing your belongings can do you a lot of favours during this time. To help make your move as smooth as possible and protect your possessions, here’s a short guide on how to efficiently organise your moving boxes.
Start with the Right Boxes and Materials
Before starting your move, make sure you have the right materials. This includes:
- A variety of different packing boxes
- Tape & a tape dispenser.
- A couple of marker pens.
- Bubble wrap or butcher’s paper for fragile items.
At Ezi Storage, we can supply all these items. Check out our range of moving materials and cheap moving boxes.
Plan and Label your Packing
There’s no point in packing your boxes nicely and carefully if you have no idea what’s in them. Make sure you sort and categorise your belongings and label your moving boxes before you begin packing.
Start by deciding which items are destined for which rooms. Label the boxes accordingly and number them so that you will know if there are boxes missing once you get to your new home. It also makes unpacking a breeze, because you won’t be running around from room to room.
Utilise Boxes and Space Correctly
It pays to pack your removal boxes in a well thought out way. Pack heavier items in smaller boxes, so that you can actually lift them. It’s also a good idea to pack heavier items closer to the bottom of the boxes, as this will reduce the risk of lighter objects becoming squashed or broken.
Ensure delicate items are wrapped well in either bubble wrap or butcher’s paper. You should also aim to fill all the empty spaces. Think of it like a game of tetris. The less space in between the items, the higher score. The best packed boxes won’t rattle or move at all, ensuring your items will be less likely to become damaged during the moving process. Consider using soft items, such as pillows, or teddies if you’re so inclined, as cushioning materials to keep your belongings safe.
Properly Prepare Your Boxes
Prepare your boxes before packing. Strengthen weak spots with tape and consider an extra layer of cardboard as reinforcement for particularly heavy boxes. If you’re struggling to seal a box, there’s a chance you’ll run into issues later in the move, with boxes popping open at inopportune times. Avoid overpacking and make sure cartons are tightly sealed with tape. You should also stick to quality packing materials, as they are less likely to break and create heartache, especially with heavy or easily breakable items.
Make use of special packing boxes:
Specialty moving boxes are designed just so for a reason. And we definitely recommend using them.
For clothing
- Our port-a-robe carton with built-in rod is perfect for moving and shifting clothing. It’s designed so you can just pop your clothes on the hangers into the box. This means less time spent packing, unpacking and ironing your clothes. However, be careful not to overpack these cartons, as it may cause the boxes to break, bringing you right back to where you won’t want to be – a pile of clothes on the ground.
For the kitchen
- For cups, mugs and other delicate items, make sure you make use of the purpose-built kitchen cartons. Although we still recommend wrapping fragile items, it reduces the risk of breaking your wine glasses or mugs.
For the study
- Archive boxes are the easiest and most efficient way to transport important files and loose-leaf paper. It reduces the chance of documents getting damaged during the move, and also keeps them organised when unpacking on the other end. Just make sure you’re labelling the boxes well as you pack them, so you know which boxes are which.
For televisions and pictures
- These items are often too large and awkwardly shaped to fit into regular packing boxes, For framed paintings, we recommend our picture cartons. Additionally, we offer plasma television covers in a range of sizes. These specialised moving materials are designed to minimise damage during the move, but it also lets the removal team know to take extra precaution when handling them.
